Water, Food Availability, and Anthropogenic Influence Determine the Nesting-Site Selection of a Desert-Dwelling Bird, Xinjiang Ground-Jay (Podoces biddulphi)

چکیده
Nesting-site selection is an important aspect of the breeding process in birds, as it usually determines nesting and successes. Many factors can affect bird nest-site selection, including anthropogenic disturbance. In extreme desert environment, such Taklamakan Desert China, birds’ survival pressure high, especially for rare species Xinjiang Ground-jay (Podoces biddulphi). We studied this from March 2017 to May 2019. A Chi-square test, independent sample t-test, Mann–Whitney U-test, generalized linear models were applied possible Ground-jays. The main determining distances human settlements, water, edge oasis. Ground-jays nested near available water resources easier access, which arid environments. Individuals chose nest far oasis edges settlements increase food availability reduce interference activities, respectively. Overall, availability, influence affecting study. Therefore, these results suggest that there a trade-off between reproduction. Further studies are required verify whether similar site preferences may also apply other desert-dwelling species.

Influence of public road proximity on ground-dwelling insect communities
Ecological studies on road’s impact on wildlife have concentrated on vertebrates although less is known of their effects on invertebrates. The current study presents public road influences on species richness, abundance, and diversity of ground dwelling insects in Arusha National Park in Tanzania. Values from pitfall traps data were generally higher in core habitat than road verge. Nine species...
متن کاملSelection Indicates Preference in Diverse Habitats: A Ground-Nesting Bird (Charadrius melodus) Using Reservoir Shoreline
Animals use proximate cues to select resources that maximize individual fitness. When animals have a diverse array of available habitats, those selected could give insights into true habitat preferences. Since the construction of the Garrison Dam on the Missouri River in North Dakota, Lake Sakakawea (SAK) has become an important breeding area for federally threatened piping plovers (Charadrius ...
متن کاملDoes nest-site selection influence bobwhite nesting success in’south Florida?
Context. Nest-site selection can influence nesting success, and thus population dynamics, of many species of groundnesting birds. Despite the economic importance as a game species, populations of northern bobwhites have been declining throughout the southernUnited States. This paper reports the nesting ecology of northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) on Babcock-Webb Wildlife Management Area,...
متن کاملThermal Patterns Constrain Diurnal Behavior of a Ground-Dwelling Bird
Recently, gaining knowledge about thermal refuges for vulnerable species has been a major focal point of ecological studies, and this focus has been heightened by predicted temperature increases associated with global climate change. To better understand how organisms respond to thermal landscapes and extremes, we investigated the thermal ecology of a gallinaceous bird species (northern bobwhit...
متن کاملFactors affecting nesting success of a bird assembly in the central Monte Desert, Argentina
We estimated nesting success of a breeding bird assemblage in the central Monte Desert in four breeding seasons (1995–1999). We analyzed the effect of year, period within the breeding season, nest type, and nest location on daily survival rates (DSR). Averaged nesting success of passeriforms in natural habitats was very low ( 20% on average, n=12 species). DSR tended to be lower during the egg-...
